It's no secret that times are tough lately, financially speaking, what with inflation, widespread layoffs, and soaring gas prices. That can make it hard to save for your future, and you may be wondering whether you can even retire if you're living on a middle-class salary. Here's a look at that question. Image source: Getty Images. What's "middle-class"? ---------------------- The Pew Research Center defines middle-class incomes as ranging from two-thirds to double the median household income. Per the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the real median household income as of 2024 was $87,730. (A median number means half of all households will have higher incomes and half will have lower ones.) It's now 2026, so that might increase a bit. Add, say, 5%, and the estimate of the median household income rises to around $92,000. So middle-class incomes would range from around $61,640 to around $184,000. Can you retire a millionaire on a middle-class salary? ------------------------------------------------------ Is it possible to retire a millionaire on a middle-class salary? It certainly is, but with some caveats: You have to be able to save and invest money diligently -- for many years. Those with earnings closer to the top of the middle-class range will have an easier job of it than those earning closer to $61,640. How much time you have also matters -- a lot. Check out the table below, which shows how your money might grow over time at 8% annually. I used that number to be a bit conservative, as the overall stock market has averaged annual gains of close to 10% over long periods -- and it might average less (or more) than that over your particular investing period. Many advise socking away 10% of your salary for retirement, but if you're late to the game, 15% or even 20% can make more sense. Whether you reach millionaire status will depend on how much you can save, and for how long. | Growing at 8% for | $7,500 Invested Annually | $15,000 Invested Annually | | --- | --- | --- | | 5 years | $44,000 | $88,000 | | 10 years | $106,649 | $217,298 | | 15 years | $203,641 | $407,282 | | 20 years | $343,215 | $686,429 | | 25 years | $548,295 | $1,096,589 | | 30 years | $849,624 | $1,699,248 | | 35 years | $1,292,376 | $2,584,752 | | 40 years | $1,942,924 | $3,885,848 | Calculations by author via Investor.gov. I used two different annual contributions, figuring that most people with earnings close to $61,640 probably can't contribute $15,000 annually to retirement accounts. Think about which of the columns above fits you best. Either way, you can see that given enough time, you can certainly become a millionaire. How to invest? -------------- So how might you aim for that 8% annual gain? Well, perhaps with one or more simple, low-fee index funds, such as these: * **Vanguard S&P 500 ETF** (VOO +0.82%) * **Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF** (VTI +0.74%) * **Vanguard Total World Stock ETF** (VT +0.95%) They will, respectively, invest you in 500 of America's biggest companies, just about all of the U.S. stock market (including smaller companies), and just about all the stocks in the world. So don't think that achieving millionaire status is not a possibility for you. Because it very much might be.

While they both have strong long-term track records, the **Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF** (SCHD +0.25%) and the **Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF** (VTI +0.74%) construct their portfolios very differently. This Vanguard exchange-traded fund (ETF) essentially invests in the entire investable U.S. equity market. This Schwab ETF targets dividend-paying stocks with healthy balance sheets, long histories of dividend payments, and above-average yields. They can both fit into almost any portfolio, but one of them is built to do better over the long term. Image source: Getty Images. SCHD vs. VTI: The tech allocation makes the difference ------------------------------------------------------ The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is considered one of the best dividend ETFs, and for good reason. Its high-quality tilt, dividend sustainability, and high yield make it appropriate for both income seekers and anyone looking for a more conservative complement to their portfolio. But it is more defensive, which means it doesn't have the upside potential that many growth ETFs or even broad market funds have. Expand NYSEMKT: VTI ------------ Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF Today's Change (0.74%) $2.67 Current Price $362.87 ### Key Data Points Day's Range $361.47 - $363.13 52wk Range $283.00 - $363.13 Volume 2.9M The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF does currently have that potential. Even though it holds roughly 3,500 stocks, it has about 36% of its portfolio invested in tech. That is going to give it more upside potential over the long term, just as it has over the past two decades. To reiterate, both are great ETFs. But when it comes to long-term upside, the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF is more likely to hit the mark.

Caught myself comparing SPY and VTI again the other day, and honestly, the choice between these two broad market ETFs comes down to what you're actually trying to do with your portfolio. So here's the thing - SPY tracks the S&P 500, which means you're getting the 500 largest companies. It's laser-focused on big-cap exposure. VTI, on the other hand, holds something like 3,600 stocks and covers the entire U.S. market - large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, the whole spectrum. If you want true broad market ETF coverage, VTI definitely casts a wider net. Cost-wise, VTI wins pretty decisively. The expense ratio is just 0.03% compared to SPY's 0.09% - so you're paying about one-third as much in fees. VTI also edges out SPY slightly on dividend yield (1.10% vs 1.05%), which adds up over time. Performance-wise though, it's closer than you'd think. SPY actually delivered better one-year returns (13.13% vs 12.43%) and had a slightly smaller maximum drawdown over five years. But we're talking marginal differences here - both are solid performers. SPY's advantage comes from being concentrated in the largest, most stable companies, while VTI's broad market approach means you're exposed to more diversification but also more volatility from smaller holdings. The real question is whether you want pure large-cap stability or the broader diversification that comes with a comprehensive broad market ETF. SPY gives you focused exposure to market leaders. VTI gives you the whole market for cheaper. Both work, just depends on your strategy.
