Illegal Bitcoin mining in Russia due to losses by giant Rosseti
In a report shared by the TASS agency, Russia's Rosseti Group, operator of the red electric state, reported that illegal Bitcoin mining rings caused losses of more than 1.3 million rubles (US$ 14.2 million) in 2024 due to energy theft.
In fact, the damage spread to several regions, with the greatest impact recorded in the North Caucasus region, where the company lost over 600 million rubles, which is equivalent to more than 6.6 million dollars. Although losses of 120 million rubles were recorded in the Central and Volga regions.
The largest individual case was discovered in Novosibirsk, where an illegal mining operation operated 3,200 mining devices, diverting electricity on a scale that authorities described as industrial.
