Just checked my SASSA grant status and realized I need to update my banking details before the next cycle. Here's what I learned about the process - might help if you're in the same boat.

So basically, if you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online. You have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original SA ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account - either a stamped bank statement from the last three months or a letter from the bank confirming the account is active and in your name. They won't pay into joint accounts or third-party names, so make sure it's all yours.

The form you need is called the Payment Method Change Form or Consent Form for Bank Payment. Once they process it, it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Important: if you're updating banking details for SASSA R350 or any permanent grant, submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next payment cycle. Miss that deadline and you'll wait another month.

For the SRD R370 grant though, it's way easier - everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, you click it and add your new bank details. Takes a few days to weeks to verify.

Phone number changes work similarly. For permanent grants, call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. For SRD, use their online contact portal - you'll get an OTP sent to your new number to confirm. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website, not some random third-party site claiming to do this. Scams are out there.

One thing - if you're doing a money transfer option instead of bank payment, your phone number needs to be RICA-compliant (registered in your name). That's the rule.

Tbh the in-person route for permanent grants is a bit of a hassle, but it's the most secure way. Better than risking your grant getting stuck because of wrong details. Anyone else had to do this recently?
