Water outage in Mexico City: 5-day interruption due to maintenance work at the well
The Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management (SEGIAGUA) carried out maintenance and repair work that resulted in a scheduled water shutdown in Mexico City during the second and third weeks of February. This disruption affected hundreds of families in at least two different districts, with specific schedules depending on the nature of the work performed.
Causes and scope of the water outage in Mexico City boroughs
The service interruption was due to two separate infrastructure projects. In Iztacalco borough, the pump equipment at Nueva Santa Anita well was replaced, a critical operation to ensure the optimal functioning of the system. Simultaneously, in Iztapalapa borough, repairs were made to a gate located at the Judío Lerma trifurcation, a key infrastructure for water distribution.
Affected neighborhoods and restoration schedule
In Iztacalco, two neighborhoods experienced a decrease in drinking water service: Nueva Santa Anita and Viaducto. Work began on Friday, February 13, at 1:00 PM, lasting five consecutive days. Water supply was restored on Wednesday, February 18, once the work was completed.
In Iztapalapa, the affected areas were Surponiente, Centro, Nororiente, and Norponiente. In this case, water service was restored starting Saturday, February 14, at 5:00 AM.
Alternatives and recommendations during water outages
During the interruption, SEGIAGUA made available to residents the H2O Line (*426) to request water trucks or report shortages. Authorities recommended that residents of Mexico City adopt preventive conservation measures:
These preventive measures are essential during scheduled water outages in Mexico City, helping families maintain basic services during periods without supply.
