Vitalik Reiterates DeFi Strategic Position: Security, Privacy, and Decentralization Remain Core Visions of EF

On February 25th, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a message reaffirming the Ethereum Foundation’s (EF) strategic focus on decentralized finance (DeFi) as one of Ethereum’s core values.

He emphasized that EF’s support for DeFi is not a “scattershot” approach but has a clear strategic direction, aiming to build a permissionless, open-source global financial infrastructure that prioritizes privacy and security.

Buterin reflected on the innovative spirit of early DeFi, stating that developers should not stop at “creating better stablecoins,” but should delve into underlying logic to address fundamental issues such as risk management and future hedging, thereby proposing more elegant solutions.

Regarding specific technological development directions, the Ethereum Foundation has outlined clear focus areas:

·Security Layer: Improving security through “traditional methods” such as audits, standards, and wallet protections; and introducing innovative approaches like AI-assisted formal verification and user-side proxy protections.

·Infrastructure Layer: Focusing on oracle security and decentralization, highlighting significant “hidden dangers” in this area that require concentrated efforts from the ecosystem.

·Privacy Layer: Covering not only privacy payments but also more complex use cases, such as expanding to privacy-preserving collateralized debt positions, aiming to effectively reduce liquidation sniping risks;

·Open Source Ecosystem: The foundation will work to improve DeFi’s permission mechanisms and fork friendliness, promoting healthy industry development.

Buterin also emphasized that as a permissionless protocol, Ethereum cannot prevent the deployment of centralized trust risks or gambling-related applications, but projects supported by the foundation will have clear selectivity;

They will only collaborate with like-minded partners committed to minimizing intermediary trust, maximizing user asset control, and enhancing risk management capabilities, with the goal of jointly promoting DeFi as a truly attractive global fund management method.
