Brenda Chunga Faces 11 Federal Charges in HyperFund Fraud Case
Federal prosecutors have escalated their case against HyperFund operator Brenda Chunga with 11 serious counts, encompassing telecommunications fraud, money laundering, and the unlicensed operation of remittance services. Should she be convicted on all charges, Chunga could face up to two decades of imprisonment.
This criminal prosecution builds upon earlier civil enforcement actions. In January 2024, the SEC had already brought fraud allegations against both Chunga and co-operator Xue Lee, accusing them of conducting unregistered securities offerings. The agency’s investigation revealed that between mid-2020 and early 2022, the pair orchestrated the illicit collection of more than $1.7 billion from thousands of investors.
The scheme operated as a classic Ponzi structure, where funds from new investors were primarily used to pay returns to earlier participants rather than generating legitimate investment returns. When the operation unraveled in 2022, the collapse inflicted devastating financial damage on the investor base, with many losing their entire investments. The case underscores the persistent threats posed by elaborate investment fraud schemes in the cryptocurrency and fintech sectors.
