MFS Investment Management Chief Economist and Portfolio Manager Weissman stated in a report that Federal Reserve Chairman Powell may point out in this week's meeting that the U.S. Treasury market is functioning normally after a brief period of turmoil. Powell may also note that liquidity tools are available if market conditions allow. Furthermore, as bank reserve balances continue to decline, there may be calls for a complete cessation of quantitative tightening. However, Weissman indicated that given the Federal Reserve has just slowed the pace of quantitative easing, it is unlikely that Powell will feel the need to take further action in this area in the near term.
