Just went down a rabbit hole looking for the cheapest, safest place to live in the USA and honestly found some pretty solid options if you're willing to move somewhere less obvious.
So here's the thing—most people think you gotta choose between affordable housing or actually feeling safe at night. But according to recent analysis of crime data and cost of living across the country, there are legit places where you get both. And get this, seven of the top 15 are in Ohio. Seven. I didn't expect that either.
New Philadelphia, Ohio is basically the poster child for what I'm talking about. Population around 17k, average home value under $190k, and you're looking at roughly $1,100 monthly mortgage. Crime rates are solid too—violent crime at 0.69 per 1,000. Total annual cost of living sits around $35,500. That's actually wild compared to most metro areas.
If Ohio doesn't appeal to you, New Ulm, Minnesota is another gem. Smaller town, about 14k people, but the livability score is 82 which is genuinely impressive. Monthly mortgage around $1,300 and even lower violent crime rate at 0.29 per 1,000. Bit more expensive overall at $36,361 annually but still reasonable.
Then you've got San Elizario, Texas if you want something different. Cheapest on the list actually—home values around $167k, mortgage under $1,000 monthly. Population's smaller at just over 10k, and the violent crime rate is incredibly low at 0.10 per 1,000. Cost of living just shy of $37k yearly.
Columbus, Indiana caught my attention too because it's slightly bigger (51k people) but still manages to be one of the safest, cheapest places to live in the USA. Home values around $262k, mortgage roughly $1,550, and violent crime basically nonexistent at 0.19 per 1,000.
For something with higher livability scores, Edwardsville, Illinois ranks at 90 for livability—highest on the list. Yeah, it's toward the pricier end at $45k annually and homes around $303k, but the tradeoff is you're in a genuinely desirable community. Violent crime at just 0.30 per 1,000.
The data they used is from early 2025, pulling from FBI crime statistics, Census data, and housing indexes. So it's pretty recent and comprehensive. If you're seriously considering relocation and want the cheapest, safest place to live in the USA that actually fits your budget, these towns are worth researching. Some of them I'd never even heard of before, but the numbers don't lie.
