Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that the company is actively expanding beyond smartphones, with robotics technology becoming the next major growth engine. He expects this business to begin “scaling” within the next two years and to become a “bigger opportunity” for the company.

In January this year, Qualcomm launched the Dragonwing series of robot processors, inspired by the success of its Snapdragon processors in the smartphone market. The goal is to create standardized chipsets suitable for various robotic platforms.

The Dragonwing platform integrates high-performance hardware, software, and AI components, supporting applications from household service robots to industrial autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and even full-sized humanoid robots. It offers low power consumption and highly scalable “robot brain” solutions.

Potential Market Size Could Reach Trillions of Dollars

Amon emphasized that the rapid development of Physical AI is making robots more practical. These advances enable robots not only to perceive their environment but also to reason, adapt, and make autonomous decisions, expanding their applications to include industrial robotic arms and humanoid robots actively developed by Tesla and several Chinese companies.

Market outlook for robots remains optimistic. McKinsey estimates that by 2040, the general robotics market could reach $370 billion; Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) analysts are even more optimistic, predicting the global humanoid robot market could total $9 trillion by 2050. Some analysts believe that in the field of robotics technology alone, the potential market size could approach trillions of dollars.
