Lebanon’s PM Convenes Emergency Cabinet Meeting Amid Israeli Strikes

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam calls an urgent Cabinet session early Monday in response to intense Israeli airstrikes targeting multiple areas across the country, including the capital, Beirut, according to statements cited by reports.

The Cabinet is summoned to convene at 8 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) at the presidential palace to review the overnight developments and deliberate on government measures to respond to the escalating situation.

The emergency meeting follows heightened tensions after rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel. Salam labels the attacks as an “irresponsible and suspicious act” that endangers Lebanon’s security and gives Israel pretexts to continue its strikes. He warns: “Whoever is behind it, the launches threaten Lebanon’s safety and stability,” adding that Lebanon “will not allow the country to be dragged into new adventures” and that authorities will take all necessary steps to identify those responsible and protect the Lebanese people.

The rocket fire is claimed by the Hezbollah, which states it targeted an Israeli missile defense installation near Haifa using both rockets and drones.

In response, the Israeli army launches a new series of airstrikes across Lebanon early Monday after intercepting one of the rockets fired from Lebanese territory, noting that other projectiles landed in open areas without causing casualties or damage. Israeli authorities also warn residents of 53 villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley to evacuate and maintain a distance of at least one kilometer (0.62 miles) ahead of planned attacks.
