Vitalik Buterin (Vitalik Buterin) announced that smart accounts will be introduced to Ethereum as part of the Hegota upgrade — approximately by the end of 2026.
This is a feature that developers have been discussing since 2016. The essence is a transition from regular wallets to programmable accounts that can do much more than just store funds and sign transactions.
How smart accounts differ from regular wallets
Currently, each wallet in Ethereum is linked to a single private key: lose it — lose everything. Transactions are only paid in Ethereum, and each action requires separate confirmation. Smart accounts change this mechanism.
