According to CCTV News, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Badr gave an interview in Washington, D.C., on February 27. When asked about the “unprecedented” commitments made by Iran, Badr stated that a major breakthrough in these negotiations is that Iran has agreed never to possess nuclear material that can be used to develop nuclear weapons. This key clause was not included in the Iran nuclear deal reached during the Obama administration and is a new addition to these negotiations. Badr explained that this commitment makes the debate over “allowing uranium enrichment” no longer central, as the current focus is on “zero stockpiles.” Without stockpiling enriched materials, it is impossible to produce nuclear weapons, whether or not uranium enrichment occurs.

Badr added that Iran will achieve “zero accumulation, zero stockpiles,” and will accept comprehensive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Existing stockpiles will be diluted to the lowest natural levels and converted into irreversible nuclear fuel.

He pointed out that if the ultimate goal is to ensure Iran can never possess nuclear weapons, then the current negotiations have addressed this issue and achieved an unprecedented breakthrough. Based on his assessment of the negotiations’ progress, “a peace agreement is indeed within reach.” He called for leaving necessary space for diplomatic efforts and continuing to advance negotiations, stating that all parties have made substantial progress toward reaching an agreement.

Badr also mentioned that he has provided a detailed assessment of the negotiations’ progress to U.S. Vice President Vance as an independent mediator and observer.

Additionally, Badr believes that if negotiations proceed smoothly, about three months will be sufficient to fully implement key issues such as stockpile management, verification mechanisms, access arrangements, and oversight measures.

United Nations Calls for Focus on “Diplomatic Pathways” in Iran Situation

According to CCTV News, UN Secretary-General Guterres’ spokesperson, Dujarric, stated on the 27th that there are “two potential pathways” in the Iran situation, and the UN urges all parties to focus on diplomatic solutions.

During a press conference that day, Dujarric responded to questions about the latest developments in Iran, saying that current diplomatic efforts are sending positive signals, and the UN will continue to support this approach. Meanwhile, there have been “worrying” military movements in the region, which are “extremely concerning.”
