According to Coin.com, on February 25, Matt Western, chairman of the British National Security Council, called for an urgent and temporary ban on cryptocurrency political donations to prevent foreign interference in the UK election. Matt Western said that such donations need to be suspended until they are dealt with the risk of crypto donations, including full verification of the source of funds. The Commission also called for a review of sentencing for electoral violations, arguing that deterrence needs to be strengthened. Western has sent a letter to Steve Reed, the cabinet minister responsible for election finance, demanding immediate action — after the new election bill did not contain provisions restricting cryptocurrency donations. Earlier this year, the Reform Britain Party became the first party to say it would accept digital currency donations, and is believed to have received the first registrant cryptocurrency donations and set up a dedicated crypto portal. Western said in the letter that the committee is concerned that foreign intentions to intervene in British politics and finances may intensify before the next election, given the deteriorating global security environment.
