Non-virg¥ns are disgrace to their families.

In some traditions among the Yoruba and the Igbo, a woman’s virg¥nity was seen as a symbol of family honor, purity and proper upbringing. It was something protected, guarded, and celebrated at marriage.
Because it was treated like a treasure belonging not only to her but to her family, once she had sexual relations, people said she had “lost” her virgin¥ty.
The word “lost” reflected the belief that something valuable had been given away and could not be taken back.
