How to judge a person's level of insight? It doesn't depend on how much knowledge they have mastered, but on whether they have developed clear and stable judgment. Knowledge itself is just material; its true significance is to help people see the relationships between things, and gradually learn to judge what is more important and what is more worth pursuing. Zhuangzi said, “Those with deep desires have shallow understanding of the heavens,” not to deny desire, but to remind people: when the inner self is driven by strong utilitarianism and obsession, it becomes easy to distort the view of the world, leaving only calculations of personal interests, and thus losing understanding of the essence of things. Truly discerning people are not without principles, but are not bound by their principles and emotions. They can adjust themselves in the face of facts and maintain a distance between desire and rationality. Broadly speaking, it is the ability to distinguish good from evil and right from wrong; more specifically, it is knowing what conditions are necessary for success and what kind of people are trustworthy. The so-called high level of insight is probably not about knowing more, but about gradually reducing stubbornness and greed amid complexity, making judgment increasingly close to the truth.
