Cryptocurrencies face significant crypto down, with Bitcoin and Ethereum declining at the end of the year
Volatility hit the digital asset market in December 2025, marking a challenging period for investors. Bitcoin plummeted to levels near $87.26K, while Ethereum followed the trend with a drop to $2.92K. The broad movement affected almost the entire cryptocurrency base, consolidating a crypto down scenario that significantly impacted the sector’s total market capitalization.
Market Retraction Size
The market did not escape unscathed from this wave of selling. Total market capitalization contracted by $580 billion, ending at $2.91 trillion. Alternative tokens faced even greater pressure, with some assets like Midnight (NIGHT) recording losses of up to 28% over 24 hours. The NFT segment also felt the impact, with collections retreating more than 9%.
Technical Analysis and Future Outlook
Despite the challenging environment, analysts still see potential in the upcoming periods. VanEck remains optimistic for 2026, believing in possible recoveries. Meanwhile, sector M&A market data shows resilience: the volume of cryptocurrency deals reached $8.6 billion in 2025, representing an 18% growth compared to the previous year. This suggests that, despite recent price drops and the crypto down, institutional interest and sector development continue to advance.
