BOB (Bitcoin L2 DeFi platform) partners with LayerZero to launch a new feature, allowing users to complete local Bitcoin transactions on 11 mainstream public chains with just one click. This is another major move in the DeFi world - breaking the previously cumbersome cross-chain bridging process.
How is it implemented?
The OFT standard of LayerZero (cross-chain fungible token standard) serves as the technical core. In simple terms:
BTC → wBTC.OFT Only one transfer is required, without the need for multiple bridging operations. At the same time, it integrates BitGo's institutional-grade wrapped BTC assets, ensuring security.
Nearly 15,000 dApps (including Unichain, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Base, Ethereum, etc.) can directly connect to the BOB Gateway SDK, allowing users to deposit Bitcoin at lightning speed.
Why is this important?
Background: Bitcoin has long been “trapped” in the Bitcoin network, with poor liquidity and high barriers to entry in the DeFi ecosystem.
Value of this upgrade:
Eliminate complex cross-chain operations → User experience skyrockets
BTC liquidity becomes available, cheap, and secure → The Bitcoin ecosystem in DeFi expands
Merged BOB's intention mechanism with LayerZero's cross-chain framework → Reduced friction in participating in DeFi
Words from BOB Co-founder Alexei Zamyatin: This is the “key to Bitcoin DeFi”.
On-chain significance
LayerZero's Global BD Vice President Simon Baksys stated that this is an important milestone in expanding the use cases of wrapped BTC. In other words: Bitcoin holders can no longer just hodl; they can circulate, earn interest, and participate in strategies in DeFi like other assets.
Can this wave of operations truly drive Bitcoin's share in DeFi? Currently, BTC's TVL share in DeFi is still less than 3%, leaving a huge room for imagination.
