That recent post about mobile AI assistants went unexpectedly viral, and the comments are full of complaints about how different apps don’t connect with each other.

I just came across something Elon Musk said on the Joe Rogan podcast a while back, and listening to it really shocked me. At the time, his prediction was: within 5 to 6 years, mobile phones will undergo a complete reshuffle. App icons, operating system interfaces—all of that will become history. By then, the device in your hand will just be an AI access point. If you want to do something, just say it, and the AI will handle everything itself.

Looking at this prediction now, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched, does it?

Musk really dares to speak his mind, but honestly, what he says kind of makes sense... With apps being so fragmented right now, maybe AI unification really could shake things up. The question is, who will build this AI? Is it going to be another round of tech giants each doing their own thing? Wait, 5 to 6 years? I feel like it could happen even faster... If this actually happens, those original app engineers will have to switch jobs, haha.

No, really, Musk isn’t exaggerating this time. The current fragmented state of various apps is indeed terrible. --- Five or six years? I don’t think it’ll be that fast, but the direction is definitely right. --- Seriously, now you have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to install an app. If AI could handle everything, it’d be awesome. --- The key is ecosystem integration, which no one can really pull off unless they redefine the smartphone. --- If this really becomes a reality, how will phone manufacturers survive? --- I like this vision of the future, but the big companies will definitely fight hard to block it. --- Wait, isn’t this just an upgraded version of voice assistants? What’s going on with all those Siris and others now? --- To be honest, those internet giants don’t actually want this. The fragmentation is intentional.

This guy Musk really has a point. Looking at the App ecosystem now, it's really becoming outdated. It would be so much better if AI really took over—no need for me to install apps one by one. But 5-6 years? I doubt it. The internet giants will fight tooth and nail to stop this from happening. Basically, whoever controls the AI access point becomes the new App Store. The vested interests run too deep.

I've heard Musk say that before, but to be honest, the issue of apps not being interconnected should have been complained about long ago. The key is, who can be the first to break down this wall? The idea of AI entry points sounds great, but when that day actually comes, it will depend on whether the entire ecosystem chain can be streamlined. Right now, all the major companies are still jockeying for position. Honestly, current AI assistants are still a bit disappointing. If one could give me some reliable investment advice, that would already be impressive, haha. If this round of reshuffling really happens, we might have to learn a whole new set of operating logic all over again, which is a bit annoying. I'm just worried that when the time comes, if AI helps me operate my wallet, it'll end up bankrupting me instead.
