Today, the company owns the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).

Speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Fink said his shift in perspective—from linking cryptocurrency to money laundering to investing billions in Bitcoin—was “a very public example of a major change in viewpoint.”

“I have strong opinions, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be wrong,” the BlackRock CEO said. “My thought process is always evolving,” he added.

Alongside a compliance platform CEO Brian Armstrong, Fink again referred to Bitcoin as a “fear asset,” a point he had already explained at an event in October. At that event, during the Future Investment Initiative conference, the BlackRock executive said, “Owning crypto assets or gold is a fear asset.”

“You own these assets because you’re afraid your wealth is going to be devalued. You’re concerned about your financial security. You’re concerned about your personal safety,” Fink said about two months ago.

This week, BlackRock released its 2026 outlook report, showing a rather optimistic view on cryptocurrencies, especially regarding institutional adoption of digital assets. According to the company, U.S. federal debt should increase significantly, weakening the traditional economy and prompting institutional investors to seek alternative assets such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
